The best markdown editors

No surprise, this list leans heavily towards macOS/iOS because I am a Mac user. Among the apps are some that work on other platforms, such as Linux or Windows.

My fallback markdown app remains Obsidian. The app is served up as no-bones-about-it markdown editor and you learn how to extend it from there: as a journal, to manage tasks, and to write. Unlike Notion, for example, which loads all bells whistling and you are forced to pare it back to see what’s below the surface. In my opinion, Notion’s approach simply leads to confusion.

As an aside, I am trying out Plainva and ZenNotes, open-source alternatives to Obsidian, plus Pellet, Cognito and Nota. I will update you on how those go in a future review.

This is an opinionated list of markdown editors, aimed mostly at writers, with the occasional code editor thrown in.
